What is healing? The subject of 'healing' is often a thorny one. From my understanding, any one of us could be used by God as a channel for healing at any time - not just those blessed with the gift of healing. Also healing isn't always to do with physical healing, but can also be about a lovely wholeness - where peace enters into a persons life, or they experience an acceptance of an illness or situation, being able to cope with it by God's strength and power. So what do you think? Do you agree with the above? If so, why? If not, why not?(Topic submitted by cathylou. Photo: "enough tears..." by carf on Flickr) NB. If you want to share your personal experiences of healing rather than enter into this discussion then do share with us on this thread in our "Meditation and Sharing" section First | Prev | 206 replies, page 11 of 11 | Next | Last I could tell a thing or two about healing, however as is mostly the case peeps dont listen or disagree. Even with my experience,Im not that eager to share due to the fact that everyone thinks they know better scenario.Yep you know more than me,Ive only got 20 yrs experience lol!a 20 yr old nurse comes onto the ward, and cannot handle patients Ward managers cant handle patients either -sorry Bussiwiswe.--come onto the wards and see the chaos!Me Meeerre Meee has to sort it all!!!Im suddennly the resposible one!!!!!!All of a sudden Im resposible for very unpredictable characters.loloIll sack the mess and just be resposible for you, that wont be such a problem.Good God Ive had enough practice . and a 20 yr old girl ask "why is he being like that" Oh I say,(hes mad)yes completely dranged actually -fucking mad -no other explanation -and the she cries to her tutor The bottom line on healing IMO is that the body's immune system can handle most things and heal itself. When it gets overwhelmed we can go to the medical profession for help. If that doesn't seem to help, Christians and others look to their God and his promises to heal, such as in Exodus 15v26, "...for I am the LORD that heals you (YHWH - Rapha). Healing is from the LORD in any case because he created us as in Psalm 139v14 - "I will praise you; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are your works; and that my soul knows right well". Our words of reassurance can help the healing process. Prov.25v11 says, "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver". James 3v1-13 describes the power of our words. v2 says, "For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body." No one is perfect but we can be careful to have a positive attitude in relating to others.
Have you ever had to wipe bottomms mymoss?from someone that does not want their arse wiped? Well - I go to God first, not last mymoss - but I know what you are saying. I think God is in and through ALL healing, natural or not. All is natural when you think about it. There is nothing which is not created. The spiritual is another dimension of natural imo - all is by and from God.all these things are easy to say, nurses have to do these kind of things. we get into the nitty gritty of illnessesYota, I have had to wipe bottoms. But I'm not really sure what *you* think that has got to do with healing unless you tell me. Posted by Yota So why not do us all a favour and tell us a thing or two about healing so that we can have the pleasure of listening and maybe even agreeing or disagreeing?
I could tell a thing or two about healing, however as is mostly the case peeps dont listen or disagree.
and yes I think I even do these things in a compassionate manner, Gets on my nerves though this offensive righteosness from people that think they know about stuffI have wiped an adult bottom and have been changing an adult's 'nappies' since Thursday. I very much admire and respect those nurses and carers who do it for strangers. It IS part of healing as it's part of care - and finding a way to give people as much dignity as is humanly possible in the circumstances.Nice one Acorn, I actually dont know How I do it!Its maybee empathy or somethingWhen I go to courses I honestly feel like teaching the teachersIts an art,I doubt you could teach itPosted by Yota But would you say that healing is something that we gradually learn to do better? So, when you've been doing it for 20 years, it comes a lot more naturally than when you're still only 20 and you've not had much to do with illness?
Its an art,I doubt you could teach it...
you are right again Boogie,Its about dignity. I know I do this in thhe best way-Patients actually ask me-ask for me too take them to the loo!!Its all about underrstanding really -thats all it is -Its simppleIn my experience Acorn you have it or you dont. Nurses can be nurses but a good nurse has it without any teaching.Id say I have it !!some nurses just wanna be ward Managers and have nothing to do with patients.SS would probably back me up.at the end of the day,I can say I help people, and patients do benefit from me -ask them they would tell you!No Yota I haven't done much cleaning of bottoms except for crying babies. I would be tempted to hold the wipe near their nose in case they didn't know what was going on, but I don't know if that would be helpful. I did that to a granddaughter and she settled down, but thereafter would take off her own dirty diaper, leaving it wherever and go sit on the couch to watch TV. I think maybe what Yota may be trying to respond to is this... from the opening post There are people who have no thought for the "nature" of God's healing - they just respond instinctively to human need in a practical way. So in loose terms they are responding to God's call by using their personal/professional skills. When you are nursing the terminally ill, the elderly, the senile, then your aim isn't to heal the body so much as healing the pain, the hopelessness, the loneliness associated with our decaying human bodies. Those who do that are just as much a channel of God's healing as any of the more obvious healers.
From my understanding, any one of us could be used by God as a channel for healing at any time - not just those blessed with the gift of healing.
Posted by Yota I think there is a lot of truth in this. The Bible talks about us all having different gifts and I'm one of those who actually thinks this is true!! Going back to this:
In my experience Acorn you have it or you dont.
Posted on the OP I think gifts of healing are many and varied. But I think that empathy/compassion is an important one and I would agree with Yota that this comes much more easily to some people than to others. However, I also think that our experiences of illness and of caring for others also help us. I know that I have a great deal more confidence in this area now than I did when I was a painfully shy 19-year-old volunteer carer with no nursing experience...So I think both our gifts and what we learn from one another are important. And then I think that how we relate to God can also be important in making us a channel for healing. And I think this because I believe God is the source of all life and healing, so being open to God has got to be a good thing!
From my understanding, any one of us could be used by God as a channel for healing at any time - not just those blessed with the gift of healing.
Posted by mymoss Yes - absolutely! It comes back to this business of having different gifts. If we are doing and being what God intended us to do and to be, then I think we are much more likely to be content. And contentment is one of the many things that helps us to keep well... and hence helps us to keep others well too!!(ETA: cross posted with Jools)
Doing something we love is good for our health.
