Election of a Mediator
Posted by Jen
Voting has begun! Read the updated OP for instructions.
Your nominations are invited for the post of Mediator for St Pixels Ltd.
The person elected will work with a second mediator, currently Jilly.
This post is open to any user or member of St Pixels, although the person appointed will on merit of impartiality not be permitted to be a member of the Board of Directors, Leadership or Hosting teams.
Information about the role of a Mediator can be found at http://www.stpixels.com/article?article=bd9378b7-d370-4023-9c5c-8d974dcd606f
Updated:
The 2 nominations are :
LARCH nominated by Busisiwe
PAULLUAP nominated by Jools
CANDIDATES PROFILES:
Larch writes:
I have been a Pixie for a little under a year and gained a lot from it – so would welcome a chance to give a little something back.
Outside of Pix, I work for the Open University. I also work for the General Medical Council, investigating doctors where there are concerns about their practise. I have acted as an Independent Complaints Officer and worked as a Family Mediator (helping separating parents agree arrangements for their children). Hopefully this experience would help me to be fair as a Mediator for Pix.
Paulluap writes:
My name is Paul Wolsko (PaulluaP), living in Hopatcong, New Jersey, USA. I have been a participant of St. Pixels, in its various forms, since May 2004 and continue to support it, since I feel it has value and relevance in a changing world...and I enjoy the people here immensely. Recently. I have been nominated for the position of Mediator.
In my professional life, I spent 35 years in Information Technology software engineering for a large Insurance company, the remaining 20 years as department manager with a large staff reporting to me. One of the most useful management tools for dealing with conflict resolution is "Mediation". It is not always appropriate (i.e. when one person punches another in the nose), but when a situation causes strained relations and intervention is requested, mediation can work nicely, since the end result is not "Winner Take All". It requires the mediator to ascertain the facts, set emotion aside and, probably the most important factor, find areas of agreement between the parties. I have found it interesting that conflicting parties generally agree on more things then they differ, and it's important to stress these. It is a balancing act, as you never wish to belittle people, or to make light of someone's position. In some instances, I feel that I have served in this capacity occasionally, albeit informally, in my visits to St. Pixels. I feel it is a gift that should be used if you've got it.
I retired a few years ago and have my own business doing odd jobs but, primarily, making heirloom picture frames from fine hardwoods. My wife, Kathleen and I have been married almost 40 years. We have two grown sons and a large, nasty, dog who likes long walks in inclement weather.

Jen - I'm presuming we need to ask the person we're thinking of if they're prepared to stand??
Posted by Jen 30 Jun 2010 at 21:59
Of course - and they need to email me to confirm their agreement.

What are the duties of a mediator? What will they mediate on?

How much work does it involve Jen? ie How often do things get as far as the mediators?
Once the mediators make their recommendations, what happens then?
Posted by pidge 2 Jul 2010 at 21:33
So where do we find a list of those on the board of Directors, leadership and hosting teams?
And why doesn't my spell checker work here? I'm lost without it.
Posted by Jen 2 Jul 2010 at 22:02
Larch - it is difficult to predict how much work it will involve. You could always have a word with Jilly - I believe she has been called on once or twice while she has been a mediator.
ETA The role of a mediator is to be a neutral advisor to both the directors and site users. The recommendations of the Mediators will be taken seriously by the Directors in their decision making.

UPDATE ON NOMINATIONS
Currently I have received 3 nominations – 2 of which have been confirmed by the nominee:
Larch nominated by Busisiwe
Paulluap nominated by Jools
The deadline for nominations and confirmation of willingness to stand is midnight BST 11th July 2010. It would be helpful if nominees could let me have a paragraph – up to 100 words about themselves and what they could bring to the role of mediator when they confirm.
